How Solar Works in Malaysia
Everything you need to know about going solar in Malaysia.
Solar Panels & Your Home
Solar panels convert sunlight into electricity using photovoltaic (PV) cells. During the day, your panels generate power that feeds directly into your home, reducing the amount of electricity you draw from TNB. Any excess energy can be exported back to the grid through net metering.
Net Metering & Solar ATAP
Malaysia's Solar ATAP programme allows homeowners to sell excess solar energy back to TNB at the prevailing tariff rate. The 2026 quota is now open with unlimited capacity, making it an ideal time to go solar.
TNB Electricity Rates
TNB charges tiered rates for residential electricity. Tier 1 (first 200 kWh) costs RM 0.218/kWh, while Tier 2 (201–300 kWh) costs RM 0.334/kWh. Higher tiers cost even more. Solar helps you avoid the most expensive tiers by generating your own power during peak sunlight hours.
Typical Costs & Savings
A typical 5–8 kW residential solar system in Malaysia costs RM 22,500–36,000 installed. Most homeowners see payback periods of 4–7 years, with 25-year savings of RM 60,000–120,000 depending on system size and electricity usage.
